A Knitted Bench

I was walking past a knitting store in my neighborhood not too long ago and saw this beautifully knitted bench in front of the store!

Lots of work to create that bench cover! It definitely caught my attention as I walked by. Here’s a picture of the knitting store. Cute, eh?

Baby Gifts!

I’ve been in a knitting and crochet frenzy trying to make presents for my pregnant friends. I wanted to share a few projects that I made for a friend of mine who is having a baby boy! I mailed her package to her this week, so hopefully she’ll get it soon. It was my first time crocheting booties, so there was a little bit of a learning curve for me to make it!

Here is the baby cardigan I made. It’s called the Ribbed Baby Jacket by Debbie Bliss. You can find it on Ravelry or find the free pattern here.

The baby mitts I made are called Stay-Put Baby Mitts by Jillian Neary. It can be found on Ravelry or the free pattern can be found here.

These baby booties were crocheted called Baby Ankle Boots by Mon Petit Violon. I purchased the pattern on Etsy. Or you can find and buy the pattern directly on Ravelry.

I am making these baby booties again for another friend who is having a boy. I will have to buy one more skein of yarn to make one for myself. They are super cute! Even though I am having a girl, these booties could probably be unisex, no?
There is a cute girl version of these booties that I plan on making for myself and another pregnant friend. I just have to figure out what yarn to use.
The yarn I used here is the Margrite Karabella Yarns. it is 80% superfine merino wool and 20% cashmere so it’s super soft. I love the yarn! It’s a thinner yarn as I was hoping to make this for a newborn infant. Hopefully it will fit!  Read more →

Holiday Knitting

Hi everyone! I know it’s been a while since I last posted, so I figure it’s time to post again. I have some holiday knitting projects to share with you, courtesy of Today’s Mama. The men’s scarf pattern that I designed for my husband a couple of years ago was one of the designs that was featured on her blog. She has many, many projects listed here, so it may be hard to see mine at first, but keep looking. It’s in the lower left hand corner of the second batch, the charcoal grey scarf with orange stripes.

Here is the link to the blog post.

In case you’re interested in knitting an easy pattern for your father, brother, husband, boyfriend, or any other man in your life, here’s a direct link to the free pattern. It was posted on my old blog that I transferred to this one, all except for this pattern. Anyone know if blogspot allows files to be uploaded? If so, I can start putting patterns on here instead.

I haven’t begun my holiday knitting yet, but I think I should start! I’ve been too busy knitting and crocheting baby presents. I’ll post those pictures soon!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Read more →

Quick Eco Tote Bag Project

I haven’t made any projects for myself in so long that I really thought it was time to do something quick and fun for myself. Most of my time is spent finishing up assignments, so I needed to take a little break and do something that wasn’t required of me. A friend of mine who is currently living in Korea sent me a little sewing kit from a company called the Sewing Factory. This kit just has a piece of fabric with an illustration printed on it to make an eco tote bag. I’m assuming it means that the fabric was made of eco-friendly fabric? There were no instructions, just cutting, folding, and sewing lines. I put it together in a way that I thought made sense.

It was so gratifying to have a completed project in just a few hours! It probably would have taken less time if I worked on it without stopping. Here is the final product. It’s simple but cute! It’s a small bag, so I’ll probably use it to hold supplies or a knitting project. There’s a design on the back too, just some flowers sprinkled about. I’ll update this post when I take a picture of the back.

Doing this project actually made me feel like I had some time on my hands to do things outside of work. It was so much fun that I decided to try and make time every week for a few hours to do something that wasn’t required of me. Hopefully that means more projects to share with all of you! Read more →

Cute Mary Jane Baby Booties

I found this cute baby bootie pattern in the book Vintage Knits for Modern Babies.

I really took my time in selecting the yarn for this baby bootie because I had experience with baby booties before where the outcome was not that cute just because of the yarn choice. It had to be soft, fuzzy, and in a color that would match the little yellow baby girl cardigan that I am knitting.

I am so pleased with the results. The booties are cute, soft, and a quick pattern to knit up. I think it took me more time to sew the piece together than it was to knit it. I modified the button hole just a bit to make it closer to the edge. See my pattern on Ravelry here. This would make a great gift. Here’s what my baby booties look like!

Cute Dog Raincoat

I saw this adorable dog raincoat on Inhabitat. It is an upcycled dog coat from an old umbrella. The pug was so cute that I had to post it here. My pug, you can see my pug here, is in need of a raincoat, so maybe this is an idea I can try. Super cute! I love it. Read more →

Knitting a Baby Cardigan

It’s been one of my goals to finish knitting my first cardigan. I’ve started several cardigans for myself and even completed one of my own design, but as with all first projects, there is always room for improvement. I forgot to account for ease so the cardigan doesn’t quite fit well yet. Maybe after some modifications, I can wear the cardigan coat that I designed for myself.

After that experience, I decided to start with something a little bit easier that I have always wanted to do anyway. I am currently taking a knitting class, so for the final project I decided to make baby clothes. It’s much more likely that I will have finished pieces by the end of the class.

Here’s the cute little baby cardigan that I chose for the part of the final project. It’s about 90% of the way there. I found the pattern on etsy and I love it!

Here’s a link to the project on Ravelry if you’re a member of the knitting community. All the details are there. I’m going to go shopping for some buttons to add on soon. :) Next I need to find an equally cute baby boy sweater or cardigan to make.

In addition to this baby cardigan, I am planning on making a pair of baby booties and some amigurumi dolls (knitted or crocheted animals). It’ll be my first stuffed animal endeavor and loads of fun. I even found a kit for an owl that I will knit sometime. Lots of knitting projects to be displayed here so come and check back soon!  Read more →

Reconnecting to my love of knitting

I am re-connecting with knitting again and am discovering that I should not have let anything get between me and my knitting needles. It’s one of the loves of my life. Seriously. I knew I liked it, but this past week made it clear and obvious that I need to take it seriously it again. It brings me so much joy. Why not spend more time doing the things that truly make you happy? And that’s what knitting does for me. I’m not sure why. Maybe some of you understand out there. Those of you who are knitters know what it feels like to have a FO (finished object). The satisfaction of finishing knitting something that we really like is amazing. Even the thought of starting a new project making something gets me excited. It is the perfect antidote for a bad day.

The reason why I am telling you all this is because I am considering dedicating the majority of the content of this blog to knitting. And maybe sewing and fashion design, but I think it is all going to start with knitting. I must do what I love, and although knitting is just a hobby for most, I feel like there’s something more I can do with it, and I’m determined to give it a try. It is a little funny for me to think about how much I love knitting. Logically it does not make much sense. It takes months to finish a big project. You can do many other crafts that take a fraction of the time, but maybe it’s precisely that process that brings the joy and sense of accomplishment.

There are many things I feel I can live without, but knitting is not one of them. I must knit. I must create. I must design and make beautiful things. Read more →

I love knitting. Period.

I don’t know what it is about knitting, but it soothes my soul. I was having one of those days where I was feeling a little bit… blah. Or maybe more than blah, and needed a pick me up. Back in the day I might have chosen a vice to make me feel better (ice cream was the most frequent choice), but the sweet cravings have long since gone away and was never the thing I really craved to begin with. Back in those days, I’d be left with an empty carton of ice cream, still noticing that I was not feeling better. Since then, I have found more constructive (and productive) ways to lift me up, and to my surprise knitting does the trick.

I don’t even have to be knitting. I can just be looking at pictures of potential knitting projects or be at a yarn store picking out yarn. On that particular day I was not feeling my usual happy self, I was walking home and was passing by the library and thought that it might be a great idea for me to see if they had any books for an assignment I needed research for. I stumbled upon the knitting section, my usual detour. 20 minutes of perusing the books and I found the perfect book for me that day. With lots of excitement, I took it to the register and checked it out. I actually don’t even need to read the book to make me happy. I think it’s just the process of being surrounded by certain subject matter that just really makes me happy. If I am busy and don’t have time to actually read the book, I can just look at the cover and feel perfectly content. Happy. Satiated. (Just in case you’re curious, the book I borrowed was called The Natural Knitter.)

This is how you know you have stumbled upon a passion. Read more →

Knitted Earrings

I came across an article with instructions on how to knit earrings with wire that I had been meaning to try, and I finally had the opportunity to buy the materials and try it. I was expecting it to be easy, like the instructions said. But it turned out to be a lot trickier than I thought. Looking at the picture, I thought I could just knit the earrings and it would be done.

Nope! It was knit the earrings and spend an HOUR blocking the thing to make it look like a normal pair of earrings. And not only that, I had to do it again for the other side!

This is what it looked like just after I knitted a pair of earrings.
It’s pretty, ain’t it?

Finally, here is what the final earring looks like!
Wow… that took a lot of time. It wasn’t actually the amount of total time that the earrings took that surprised me, but just how much work was involved to poke into every single hole with my bamboo needles and block every stitch to make it look normal. Just pulling it won’t do! The wire tends to kink, so it takes a lot of time to even things out.

Was it worth it? Maybe for myself, but I think I’m going to have to hold off on considering making these as presents for my friends. I made another pair of the same earrings using a thicker wire (because it was the thinnest they had at the store), and it turned out a little nicer (I think), even though the first one was the one that is using MUCH more expensive wire!

How to Knit a Ribbed Scarf

Here are some videos that demonstrate how to knit a ribbed scarf. I find that these scarves in the dark heather grey are great holiday gifts for the men in your life – fathers, boyfriends, husbands, brothers, friends, etc. I know it’s a bit warm right now to be thinking about holiday gifts, but it’s good to get a head start, right? You don’t want to be making everything at the last minute.

Last year, I found a craigslist posting with someone who wanted help finishing all their holiday knitting projects and was willing to pay a knitter to help them finish. I thought that was hilarious! Here you are trying to knit a present for someone, and in reality you are outsourcing it because you ran out of time…do you tell the recipients that you knit them a scarf?

If you don’t know how to knit yet, you will want to check out other videos on how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, which can be found here.

2 x 2 Rib
Here’s a video on how to knit a 2×2 ribbed scarf, which is good to use on thin yarn:

If you know how to create a chunky ribbed scarf, here is a video on how to knit a 1×1 rib.

My First YouTube Knitting Videos

I am so excited because I have finally uploaded a few knitting videos on YouTube. It was an idea I had a while ago, and I finally got around to uploading a few how-to videos on YouTube! I have many, many more videos to come and ideas for all of the ones I want to create this summer to teach people to knit, sew, and crochet. I am planning on throwing in some other fun videos in there of events I attend. I’m pretty excited about getting it all up and running. And most of all, if I ever forget how to do anything, I have my own catalogue of videos to refresh my memory!

So, if you know any knitters, sewers, or crafters out there, please send them the link to my youtube channel to subscribe. I would love to get a whole bunch of subscribers so that I can eventually apply for the youtube partner program. That’s my goal. And if you have any ideas of suggestions, please send them my way! Otherwise, happy knitting!

Learn How To Knit: Knitting 101

To learn how to knit, you will need a learn a few basic knitting techniques:

1. Casting On
2. The Knit Stitch
3. The Purl Stitch
4. Binding Off

Casting On
You will start every knitting project by casting on to get the yarn onto the needle.

Here is a video that shows you how to cast on:

This type of casting on is also called the Long Tail Cast On, which is a common method of casting on stitches. There are other ways to cast on, but I find this method very easy.

The Knit Stitch
The first stitch you will learn to knit is the knit stitch. If you create a scarf using all knit stitches, the pattern is also referred to as the garter stitch. This means that every single row is knitted using the knit stitch.

Here is a video that shows you how to knit the knit stitch:

The Purl Stitch
The purl stitch is the reverse of the knit stitch. If you turn your knitted piece over, the back are purl stitches.

The knit stitch and the purl stitch can be used by alternating stitches to create a ribbed pattern. For example, you can create a 2×2 ribbed pattern by knitting 2 stitches, then purling 2 stitches. Or, you can create a 1×1 ribbed pattern by knitting 1 knit stitch, then purling 1 stitch.

How to Create the Purl Stitch:

Binding Off
Binding off is important if you want to get your scarf off of your needles! When you are finished knitting to your desired length, you will bind of on the very last row.

Here is a video that shows you how to bind off:
